DRACULA

Authors

STOKER, BRAM

Description
This is the earliest edition of the most famous and influential vampire tale of all. Stoker (1847-1912) was inspired by the folklore of his native Ireland and by the Gothic novels of his countryman Sheridan Le Fanu. As DNB observes, the "complex and highly symbolic" plot here "illustrated [the author's] fears about a world approaching a new century, about the unspeakable things which could happen to ordinary people, and about male insecurity and the dangers of subservience to another person. . . . Favourably compared with Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights, and Edgar Allan Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher, it was considered weird and powerful, one of the best in the supernatural line." Received with enthusiasm by critics and the public alike, it went through 11 editions in Stoker's lifetime, and it continues to resonate with readers and to inspire other artists. This is not an especially rare book, but it is not common to find a well-preserved copy, and our appealing morocco binding provides a welcome alternative to the publisher's yellow cloth, which invariably shows up very soiled. [Bound with]: Lettre de Thomas Paine au Peuple Français sur la Journée du 18 Fructidor. (1797). (Two works in one volume). $16,000. Philadelphia, printed; London, re-printed [and] Paris: J. Almon, opposite Burlington-House in Piccadilly [and] Imprimerie-Libraire du Cercle-Social, rue du Théâtre-Français, no. 4. An VI de la Ré publique, 1776 and 1797. First editions (see below for details). Two works bound in one volume. Octavo. Quarter bound in early 20th Century parchment and cloth over boards, lettered on the spine in gilt. Modest soiling to the parchment, internally crisp and near fine. The first work, Paine's monumentally important pamphlet *Common Sense*, is the first British edition, third issue: [4], 54pp., with the blank spaces where offending passages (hiatuses) are left blank on the first page of the introduction. The second work is the first French language edition of Paine's *Letter to the People of France and the French Armies, on the event of the 18th Fructidor*. 39, [1]pp. *OCLC* indicates that the English language issue was published in New York in 1797 (and lists 15 holdings); this considerably scarcer French translation (*OCLC* locates only 5 copies) was published the same year as the "Coup of 18 Fructidor" by members of the French Directory on September 4th, 1797. Of Thomas Paine, John Adams wrote: "Without the pen of the author of Common Sense, the sword of Washington would have been raised in vain." Paine lived in France for most of the 1790s, becoming deeply involved in the French Revolution. A plaque in the street where he lived in Paris notes that Paine was an "Englishman by birth, American by adoption, and French by decree." Both pamphlets are well-preserved in a handsome binding. For *Common Sense*: *Gimbel* CS 24-27; for *Lettre de Thomas Paine*: *Martin & Walter* 3, 26322.

Observations on Modern Gardening

Authors

WHATELEY Thomas

Description
[viii] + 257pp. Ist edition untrimmed in original boards, new spine and label. Reinforced at the inner hinges but sympathetically done. Ownership possibly initially Anthony Eyre (1727-1788) of The Grove with his bookplate. In 1762 he purchased the manor and estate of Grove in Nottinghamshire, adjacent to his other properties at Rampton, Treswell and Headon, from Mr William Levinz. He undertook alterations to Grove Hall and made it his principal residence. Authorship written in pen on title page. Whateley wrote this book while living in the Mansion House in Nonsuch Park. Close on the heels of George Mason's Essay on Design in Gardening, Whateley's Observations provide the most comprehensive work on the theory and practice of English landscape gardening in the naturalistic taste before Horace Walpole's brief Essay on Modern Gardening (1782). Further it includes descriptions of key landscape gardens of the day that are hailed for the exactness. They include Stowe, Hagley, Peterfield, Painshill, Claremont and Esher Place etc.

De Chyromantia libri III authoris ciusdam vetustissimi per Joannem DRYANDRUM restituti Marpurgi, anno MDXXXVIII

Authors

TIBERTI, Antioco (1445-1500 ca.)

Description
8vo; 18th-century full vellum over boards, spine with label and gilt title; 138 [i.e. 139], (5, of which the last is a blank) pp. With four full-page chiromantic hands and several zodiacal and planetary illustrations in the text. Some light browning, but a very good copy. RARE SECOND EDITION (the first printed in Bologna in 1494 is extremely rare and is virtually impossibile to find on the mark et) of the first comprehensive treatise on palmistry. All the most famous subsequent authors on the subjects are somehow indebted to Tiberti (cf. G. Sabbatini, Bio-bibliografia chiromantica, Reggio Emilia, 1946, pp. 92-94). This edition, which was reprinted in 1541, does not bear Tiberti's name on the title-page. The original dedication by Tiberti to Ottavio Ubaldino, earl of Mercatello, is followed by a new dedication addressed by the editor Johannes Dryander to the Mainz nobleman Johann Furderer de Richtenfels. The text of the two Mainz editions differs significantly from that of the first Bologna edition, a thing that can only be explained by the fact that Dryander had not access to the first edition or to the manuscript used as a basis for the first edition; he probably had at hand only a defective manuscript and on several occasions he had to intervene to complete the incomplete text. Tiberti defends palmistry and tries to prove it as a science. In the arrangement of the seven planets on the lines of the palm, he significantly deviates from his predecessors, creating a new system that had a long-lasting influence on his successors. The work was later put in the Index. Antioco Tiberti was born into a noble Cesena family. After completing his studies in France, he came back to Italy, published his treatise on palmistry, which made him famous, and had the temerity to go to Rome at the invitation of Pope Alexander VI to defend his case. He did it so well that he was exiled, but not convicted. In 1498 he went to Rimini, where he was arrested by order of Pandolfo Malatesta. While he was in prison, the latter visited him to learn about his future. Tiberti predicted him that he would lose his lordship and would die in exile and in extreme poverty. Later, during an attempt to escape, Tiberti was captured and beheaded (his corpse remained unburied for almost a year). Shortly after Malatesta was ousted by Cesare Borgia and died in exile and extreme poverty as predicted. The only source about Tiberi's life is an eighteenth-century manuscript (Diatribae caesenates) written by a certain G.B. Braschi and now preserved at the Malatestiana Library of Cesena. VD 16, T-1255; Wellcome, I 6305.

Authors

CHAMPIER, Symphorien (ca. 1474-1539) and BARLANDUS, Hadrian (Adriaan van Baerland, 1486-1538).

Description
Dialogi XLII. Ad profligandam è scholis barbariem utilissimi. Louvain, Pieter Martens van Alst, March, 1524.8vo. (40) leaves. Title within an ornamental woodcut border including the printer's device. 8vo. (96) leaves. Title printed in red and black and a full-page woodcut at the end showing the author with his patron and his wife kneeling in prayer. Contemporary blind-stamped calf with lettering on the panels, a bit rubbed, a few small repairs, but a very fine genuine copy with several old entries of ownership on the title-page, among them that of the Order of the Friars Minor Recollect of Ypres (Belgium). Binding. The two works are bound together in a blind-stamped calf binding made by the Flemish Jacob Clercx de Geel from Antwerp active from about 1510 to 1537. He was succeeded by his son Gheert who was married with Abraham Ortelius' sister Anna. Gheert used the same panel with the first name of his father erased. In the same period, Jan Tys from Mechelen used a panel with the same design and the same text border but with his own name (cf. Bibliothèque Royale de Belgique, Exposition de reliures du XIIe siècle à la fin du XVIe: 5 avril - 28 juin 1930, Bruxelles, 1930, no. 192; S. Fogelmark, Flemish and Related Panel-Stamped Bindings. Evidence and Principles, New York, 1990, pp. 145-151, and J.B. Oldham, Blind Panels of English Binders, Cambridge, 1958, p. 16, AM.7, plate VII). On each cover there are two impressions of a panel divided into two rectangles each occupied by three animals (above: dragon, rabbit, dog; below: cattle, eagle, deer) enclosed within the curves of a vine branch. These are surrounded by a frame with the inscription: "Ligat[us] per man[us] / jacobi · clercx · qui · petit · a · malis · / erui · et ·semper / protegi · per · manus · domini" and at each angle a fleur-de-lys (see for a similar binding with the same panels, E.P. Goldschmidt, Gothic and Renaissance Bookbindings, London, 1928), I, p. 209, no. 104). Between these two panels is another panel figuring dancing peasants and a piper (cf. P. Verheyden, De Boerendans op Vlaamsche Boekbanden, in: "De Gulden Passer", 20, 1942, pp. 209-237). This seems to be the only surviving specimen of the two panels in combination with the frieze of dancers signed by Jacob Clerx (see also L. Indestege, Boekbanden iut vijf eeuven. Catalogus van de tentoonstelling, Gent, 1961, no. 141). Paris, 1896, p. 40). I:) VERY RARE FIRST EDITION of this collection of 42 short dialogues covering a wide range of topics and conversational situations mainly centered on student life and written in a distinctly humanist classical Latin. The work has an immediate success and only five months later a second edition appeared with thirteen new dialogues. It was mostly used in Northern European schools and was reprinted many times at Antwerp, Cologne, Paris and Lyon until the middle of the century (cf. E. Daxhelet, Adrien Barlandus, humaniste belge, 1486-1538. Sa vie, son oeuvre, sa personnalité, Louvain, 1938, pp. 169-180). In the dedicatory letter to his pupil Charles de Croy (1507-1564, later bishop of Turnai), he pays reverent tribute to Erasmus and Mosellanus as his literary models. The early sixteenth century brought the beginning of serious humanist engagement both with Latinity and pedagogy and the first two decades of the century had seen the appearance of the most influential colloquy collections as Erasmus' Colloquia familiaria (1518), Mosellanus' Paedologia (1518), Hegendorf's Dialogi pueriles (1520) and Barlandus' Dialogi. The possibility of the dialogue genre led Barlandus to use the colloquies increasingly as a vehicle for the critical and often satirical and polemical discussion of the major preoccupations of his age, moral and religious topics far beyond the horizon of the schoolroom. His Dialogi are of great interest not only as examples of the Latin used in the schools, and the methods of teaching it, but also as a source of information concerning school and university life in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries (e.g. the alehouse was an undesirable place for schoolboys: one who spends an evening drinking is threatened with expulsion for a repeat offence). The Dialogi are historical documents of great value to those who would picture not only the various aspects of student life at that time, but of culture generally (cf. T. Brüggeman & O. Brunken, Handbuch zur Kinder- und Jugendliteratur. Vom Beginn des Buchdrucks bis 1570, Stuttgart, 1987, cols. 919-920). Adrianus Barlandus, a native of Baarland on Zuid-Beveland (Netherlands), became a pupil of Pieter de Schot at Ghent at the age of eleven. He continued his studies at the University of Louvain, probably in 1501. Having studied at the College of the Pig, Barlandus received the degree of Master of Arts in 1505 and began teaching Latin. In 1509 he was appointed professor of philosophy. In June 1510 he was elected procurator of the Dutch nation, a position he hold again in 1516, 1530, 1532, and 1538. He also served terms as quodlibetarius in 1512 and 1520 and as dean of the faculty of arts in 1518 and 1531. He became one of the most ardent supporters of Erasmus and the new learning at the University of Louvain. In autumn 1516 he composed a catalogue of Erasmus' writings for his Brother Cornelius. In 1518 he was offered the chair of Latin in the new Collegium Trilingue, but resigned in November 1519, partly because the friction with the faculty of arts, of which he was still a member. In 1526 he was appointed to the chair of eloquence, a post he held until his death. For the use of his students he composed a Compendiosae institutions artis oratoriae (1535) and De amplification oratoria (1536). Barlandus was a prolific writer and published a collection of elegant sayings in 1524, several historical works, among them De Hollandiae principibus (1519), De rerum gestarum a Brabantiae ducibus historia (1526), numerous paedagogical and moralistic works such as De ratione studii (1525) and Institutio christiani hominis (1526). His merits as a teacher and Latinist were especially recorded in Erasmus' Ciceronianus (1528) (cf. H. de Vocht, History of the Foundation and Rise of the Collegium Trilingue Lovaniense, 1517-1550, Louvain, 1951-1955, I, pp. 267-271). Biblioteca Belgica, B-262; Index Aureliensis 113.075; Universal STC, No. 37239 (two copies: Ghent and Brugge); Nijhoff-Kronenberg, no. 2360; A. XII. II:) EXTREMELY RARE FIRST EDITION of Champier's most interesting work, a significant document for the development of cultural nationalism among Renaissance intellectuals. Champier was in Italy three times: in 1506, in 1509 and in 1515. During his last travel he spent some time at Pavia, where he was admitted to the 'collegium artistarum et medicorum'. The speech by Pietro Antonio Rustico, lecturer on logic and medicine, held on that occasion and printed toward the end of the volume, shows how proud Champier was about this honor. Rustico also alludes to Champier's family-ties in Italy, which he sees in the Campeggi families of Bologna and Pavia. At the end of the speech Rustico enumerates and praises the hitherto books published by Champier, important as an early bibliography. The main part of the volume consists of a 'epistolary duel' with Girolamo da Pavia, an Augustinian monk from Asti, with whom he had for five years an intensive correspondence through the Lyonese publisher Balthazar de Gabiano (cf. P. Jodogne, La correspondence de Symphorien Champier avec Jérôme de Pavie dans le 'Duellum epistolare', in: "The Late Middle Ages and the Dawn of Humanism Outside of Italy", G. Verneke & J. Ijsewijn, eds., Den Haag, 1972, pp. 44-56). In the Duellum Champier defends the French culture against the pretended superiority of the Italian claimed by some scholars, namely Sabellico, Foresti and Battista Mantovano. He also sees in many Italian writers detractors moved only by jealousy and malice and mentions Valla, Merula, Poggio, Pico and Girolamo Balbo. Fierce of his Lyonnais origins he praises the antique origins of his native city on the authority of Berosus, which however was rightly questioned by Girolamo da Pavia (cf. R. Cooper, Symphorien Champier et l'Italie, in: "L'Aube de la Renaissance", Genève, 1991, pp. 233-246). The volume contains furthermore various letters by Champier to others, e.g. a letter to Erasmus (Ep. 680a), in which Champier intervenes in his favor in the latter's dispute with Lefèvre d'Etaples over Psalm 8; a letter to Lefèvre d'Etaples followed by Champier's commentary on the Definitiones Asclepii (first published with Lazzarelli's translation in 1507), expressing his attitude to the Hermetic writings. But the book also contains letters addressed to Champier, mainly from other scholars and physicians, among them Alessandro Benedetti and Robert Cockburn, bishop of Ross (cf. A. Broadie, James Liddell on Concepts and Signs, in: "The Renaissance in Scotland: studies in literature, religion, history and culture", A.A. MacDonald, et al. eds., Leiden, 1994, p. 82; and J. Durkan, Robert Cockburn, bishop of Ross and French humanism, in: "Innes Review", IV, 1953, pp. 121-2.). The volume closes with Catalogus preceptorum, patronorum, familarium et auditorum, in which Champier lists his teachers, patrons, friends and students. The few libraries, which hold a copy of this work and the few scholars who mentions it in their articles, all pretend the work to be printed either at Basel or at Venice. It was in fact printed at Lyon, where the two printers Johann Froben and Jean Divineur were active for several Lyonese publishers such as (in the present volume) Luxembourg de Gabiano, Jacques Giunta and François Fradin. They even printed another work containing letters by Champier Duellum epistolare (1519) (see J. Baudrier, Bibliographie lyonnaise, VI, Lyon, 1904, p. 98; XI, Lyon, 1914, pp. 89-90). Symphorien Champier, was born into a bourgeois family at Saint-Symphorien-sur-Croise, near Lyon and studied at the University of Paris before 1495, when he matriculated at the medical school of Montpellier, which granted him his doctorate in 1504. He taught liberal arts in Grenoble and took a doctorate in theology in 1502. In 1509 he was appointed physician to Antoine Duke of Lorraine, who brought him to Nancy. Champier followed the duke several time to Italy, where he was involved in the battles of Agnadello (1509) and Marignano (1515). During his stays in Italy he won recognition as an academic teacher from the University of Pavia. In 1519 he became an alderman in Lyon, and for the last twenty years of his life he was at the center of the cultural Renaissance of that city, while simultaneously promoting the study of medicine by helping to found the College of the Holy Trinity and sponsoring translations of, and writing commentaries on, the works of Hippocrates and Galen. In the 1530s he was involved in a controversy on the merits of Greek and Arab medicine with the German physician Lorenz Fries and also with the botanist Leonhard Fuchs. Michael Servetus, who was his student, wrote a defense of Champier against Fuchs, In Leonardum Fuchsium Apologia. Defensio pro Symphoriano Campeggio (1536). Champier became more and more hostile to Arabic medicine and in Clysteriorum campi contra Arabum (this work was ironically put by Rabelais in his library of Saint-Victor), he even goes so far to advise his readers to refrain from reading the Arabs. With over fifty titles to his credit, Champier was a very prolific author, editor and compiler. His most important writings were in medicine, pharmacy, philosophy, and occultism, but he also worked in theology, history, biography, genealogy, poetry, patristics, and many other fields. The famous scholar printer Etienne Dolet remarked in his Commentariorum linguae latinae (Lyon, 1536): 'From the schools of the physicians these rushed to the battle: Symphorien Champier, Jacques Dubois, Jean Ruelle, Jean Cop, François Rabelais, Charles Paludan. From all sides this serried band of doctors made such inroads into the camp of the barbarian that, wherever they stood, no place was left to the enemy' (cf. B.P. Copenhaver, Symphorien Champier and the Reception of the Occultist Tradition in Renaissance France, The Hague, 1978, pp. 45-86; and R. Cooper, Les derniers année de Symphorien Champier, in: "Réforme, Humanisme, Renaissance", 47, 1998, pp. 25-50). Adams, C-1323; Index Aurelienis 135.510; Universal STC, no. 145128; P. VI, (Lyon & Paris, 1904), p. 98; A. Pettegrew & M. Walsby, Books Published in France before 1601 in Latin and Languages other than French, Leiden, 2011, p. 385, no. 60685.

Moby Dick

Authors

Melville

Description
Faded royal blue volume housed in a protective beige colored box or jacket with a black band on the spine against which the title was embossed in gold or silver lettering. The container was clearly of more recent vintage than the volume (perhaps mid-20th century.) Inside the box there was a program from a 1951 centennial commemoration of the publishing of Moby Dick that took place at the Princeton University Library. The Title page indicated that the volume was a first edition published by Harper & Brothers in New York and Richard Bentley in London 1851. Also, on either the inside front cover or the first right hand page, the following was inscribed in pencil: No. 27 Christmas Present to Henry From His Mother

We have been informed that a few days after we visited a house near Woodstock in Oxfordshire to assess a collection that the house was burgled and books (among other things) taken. Langley, Batty. New Principles Of Gardening: Or, The Laying Out and Planting Parterres, Groves, Wildernesses, Labyrinths, Avenues, Parks, &c. After a more Grand and Rural Manner, than has bee done before; With Experimental Directions For raising several Kinds of Fruit-Trees, Forist-Trees, Ever-Greens and Flowering-Shrubs with which Gardens are adorn'd, etc…. London: A. Bettesworth and J. Batley et al, 1728. First edition. 25 1 /2 x 21 cm. [*2,b3,A2-4,b-b4,B--Z4,Aa-Dd4,B-Z4,Aa-Bb4]. Pages iv-v erroneously numbered xi-x. HENREY Vol.II, pp. 488-449. Langley, a resident of Twickenham may well have been acquainted with Charles Bridgeman, a fellow nurseryman who assisted Alexander Pope with his garden at his Thames-side villa at Twickenham. In this work "he decried too much formality in garden design" in his pursuit of a free style. "Langley stipulates that views should be extensive as possible, and he is much in favour of ha-ha's….Langley decried the art of topiary and cut parterres, and encouraged meandering paths, and the use of fine trees for shade…..Langley's guiding rules show that his outlook on garden planning was in advance of his [architecture] designs which are still very artificial and formal." MILLARD 37. "Batty Langley was more prolific even than William Halfpenny as a producer of architectural books….including the first handbook on the layout of gardens [this title]." Clean copy — text and plates — in a firm binding, leather book-label, early owner inscription title page, raised bands, backstrip lettered in gilt, covers decorated in blind in panel designs. Original blind-stamped and gilt-stamped red cloth, all edges gilt, history of India and account of journeys, the contents are exactly as per Abbey, i.e., Title, verso blank; Preface, pages (iii) and (iv); Direct ions for Plates, 1 leaf, verso blank; Text, pages (1) to 191, pages (192) with imprint: London: Printed by L. Harrison, 373, Strand. A marvellous series of views made by Forrest during voyages along the Ganges and its tributary the Jumna. The plates include Benares, Allahabad, Lucknow, Delhi and the Taj Mahal in Agra. "Forrest was an officer in the British army. He served in Bengal from 1802 and died at Bath in 1827. During journeys, mostly overland while posted up-country with his regiment, he would make excursions by boat, palanquin or on horseback to nearby places" (Godrej and Rohatgi). The book, with its exquisite colouring, ranks alongside the works of William Hodges, the Daniells and Henry Salt, as one of the key pictorial works on India.

Flowers of the Holy Land

Authors

BOULOS, Meo

Description
Oblong folio; ff. [i], [2-23] [pressed arrangements]; with 22 arrangements of pressed flowers, each with printed title identifying a biblical location, with protective tissue, mounted on stiff card; gilt edges; some loss to the arrangement at f. 23a; a very good copy in the original red roan, carved panels of olive-wood mounted on both boards, the upper panel with a Jerusalem cross, the lower inscribed 'Jerusalem' in English and Hebrew; both panels with mosaic inlay, the spine in compartments with gilt title and florets; a little shaken, the joints and edges a bit rubbed, and slight wear to the wooden panels. Rare. An artistically composed set of pressed floral arrangements, this album is the work of Boulos Meo, rug merchant and founder of the Jerusalem souvenir shop which bore his name for almost the entirety of the twentieth century. Each plate is linked to a particular biblical location, from Mount Temptation to Gethsemane, and many of the arrangements are centred around palm crosses. Given this, the religious motifs apparent on the boards, and the printed title of the album, it seems plain that Meo's work was intended for Christian pilgrims to Jerusalem, whose numbers burgeoned as the city emerged from the lengthy period of doldrums it endured under Ottoman rule. Restrained, well-preserved, and beautifully presented, with a most unusual binding, carved as it is from local olive-wood, this is a compelling object. In missing Fedex shipment together with 4 items: MEDHURST, William H. Authors

GIOVIO [JOVIUS] (M. Paulo).

Description
First Italian edition. Woodcut title, depicting a Christian warrior with a banner and an eagle on an orb. 12mo. Late 19th century 'papier dominote' (patterned) boards, a few margins lightly water-stained, with some minor spotting to endpapers, but otherwise an outstanding copy given its age. 17pp. Rare. The first significant European description of Russia from the 16th century. The original latin edition (De legatione Ba silii Magni Principis Moschoviae) was printed by Francesco Minizio Calvo in Rome in 1525. Paolo Giovio (1483-1552) was an Italian historian, physicist and doctor. This work is based on conversations with the Russian ambassador Dimitri Gerassimov at the court of Pope Clement VII in Rome. The papacy and the Habsbourg had frequently proposed to the Muscovites that they should join together against the Ottomans. Giovio's book was utilised by many travellers to Russia in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Carte de la lune

Authors

Cassini

Description
Broadsheet measuring 58.9 x 57.8 cm, image size 53 cm; traces of earlier marginal fold; small portion of upper margin restored; lower margin with small restoration at fold, all well outside the engraved image; stitch marks from earlier binding to inner margin. Reimpression of cassini's great lunar map of 1679, made by his grandson, Jean Dominque (Cassini IV), in 1787. The first printing of this map was already rare during Cassini's l ifetime, with there now being a single copy recorded, at the Royal Astronomical Society, London. The original plate having been rediscovered, Cassini's grandson, Jean-Dominique (Cassini IV), had the map reprinted in 1787, reputedly in an edition of 100 copies. The plate was then sold on to a coppersmith as scrap by a director of the Imprimerie Nationale.

Description
First U.S. Edition . Oblong 12mo, about 7.25 inches (18.5 cm) wide, 5.25 inches (13.5 cm) tall, in brown cloth with cover pastedown, a tiger in color. 80 pages with full page color illustrations of 20 animals followed by a leaf (two pages) with text about the animal. An uncommon example of the French illustrator's work in an English language book. Published in France as "Grosses Betes & Petites Betes", that version has some bla ck and white drawings and references to Noah's Arc that this one does not. A wonderful array of Art Deco images grace this small but lovely book. Clean, sound and bright inside and out with barely a hint of extremity wear. Hardcover. Near Fine

Plan de St Gillain

Authors

Saint-Ghislain (Hainaut)

Description

Four typed letters signed to S.J. Perelman, five pages, 24 Russell Square, London, WC1, 1946 - 1961.

Authors

T.S. Eliot

Description
A fascinating series of - to all intents and purposes - fan letters to one of Eliot's favourite comic writers (a form in which TSE himself occasionally excelled, and one for the most illustrious exponents of which he felt a profound admiration). The earliest letter, addressed to "Mr Perelman" and signed in full, inquires about the failure of delivery of one of Perelman's books - presumably the first of the many that Eliot refe rs to in a later letter: "I am proud to be the possessor of so many autographed presentation copies of Perelman" - and with the intriguing autograph subscription "Don't forget the trip down the Mississippi in 1948." The second letter opens: "This has been a great disappointment. After following your progress towards London the long way around threading your way among crocodiles, gorillas, dark-skinned political enthusiasts and enemies of American capitalism, I disappear from London and return to find you come and gone." The tone of the later letters (to "Sid," and signed "Tom") is relaxed and bantering and reflects the maturity of a relationship - like that with Groucho Marx - from which Eliot drew immense pleasure. In excellent condition

Typed letter signed to Father Martin Jarrett-Kerr, two pages, Faber and Faber, 24 Russell Square, London, WC1, 15 December 1960

Authors

T.S.Eliot

Description
1. A fascinating letter (approximately 500 words) discussing the aftermath of the Lady Chatterley obscenity trial and Eliot's views on D.H. Lawrence. Eliot opens by expressing his pleasure to hear that the S.C.M. Press is to reprint Jarrett-Kerr's D.H. Lawrence and Human Existence (published under the pseudonym of William Tiverton) to which Eliot had contributed the preface. He goes on in greater detail about 'immoral' literature which he generally condemns (particularly Lolita and By Love Possessed) while exonerating Lawrence to the extent that he "at least had a very serious and laudible (sic) intention ... though I am sure I should not have liked the man." Punch holes to margin, else in excellent condition.

Three typed letters signed. Hartford, Connecticut, 1946-7.

Authors

Wallace Stevens

Description
1. STEVENS, WALLACE. Typed letter signed to William York Tindall, one page, Hartford, Connecticut, 30 August, 1946. To the well-known Columbia academic and critic, declining an invitation to do some unnamed literary task, and commenting on his trip to Hershey, Pennsylvania (home of the chocolates) in the previous September, when he "had myth pretty constantly in my mind ... it was impossible to be in the place without the feeling that one was in a laboratory in which a myth was in process ... the personal trolley system, the Spanish hotel, the Italian recreation palazzo and the really splendid theatre with electric stars twinkling in the ceiling are perfect instances of what knocks myth into a cocked hat; only, actually, the myth is getting the better of them." A lovely example of Stevens' imagination at work. STEVENS, WALLACE. Typed letter signed to William Cole, one page, Hartford, Connecticut, 2 April, 1947. Stevens responds to Cole's request, as publicity director of his publishers Alfred Knopf, that Life magazine carry a feature about Stevens. He hates the idea: "when a man in a large office permits the sort of thing that Life is thinking of ... his associates take it for granted that he is promoting himself and the whole thing tends to alienate them. I cannot think of anything more imprudent and will have nothing to do with it. I could say a lot more but no is enough." A further paragraph has a request that six more copies of Transport to Summer be sent to him. STEVENS, WALLACE. Typed letter signed to William Humphrey, one page, Hartford, Connecticut, 14 January, 1947. Stevens responds to Humphrey's letter of January 8th, and declines - "You cannot seriously expect me to do as you ask" - the suggestion that he buy the 22 year-old would-be writer a farm, and support him while he wrote short stories, in return for a never-ending supply of food. Stevens thinks it a seriously misguided project: "there doesn't seem much chance for you as a writer if you are going to engage in farm work. I am sorry that I don't have the answer." Published only in The Wallace Stevens Journal, Spring, 1994. Humphrey did in fact become a successful writer. His first novel, Home from the Hill, was published in 1958, and Alfred Knopf called it the finest novel ever to come out of Texas. His next book, written in Italy, was The Ordways, which was reprinted six times, and numbers of his short stories appeared in The Sewanee Review and Accent.

Description
1. Whilst it may be pushing it to describe the recipient - the Italian feminist, novelist, poet, literary critic, journalist, political activist and campaigning lesbian - as the Italian Virginia Woolf, it is a temptation I find myself unable to resist. Comments graciously on an article on Orlando written by Aleramo and sent to Woolf and the recipient's willingness to receive one of Aleramo's own books which, despite her scanty I talian, she feels sure she will enjoy. Corrected Typescript of an Essay on Tom Dooley, 10 pages, 1987

Authors

Paul Theroux

Description
Heavily annotated and corrected throughout by the author and apparently unpublished. Tom Dooley - "The nearer (sic) I have ever come to believing in a hero in high school" (sic) - was a doctor and highly respected officer in the U.S. Navy, from which he resigned in 1956 following allegations of being homosexual. He devoted the rest of his life to charitable works in Laos and Vietnam although he was also reputed to be working with the CI A, but evidently not as an agent. A life-long Roman Catholic, he was visited by Cardinal Spellman a few days before his untimely death from a malignant melanoma in 1961. A subsequent move for his sanctification was not successful. Signed and dated by the author at the top of the first page.
