TWO VOLUMES. BOTH FIRST EDITIONS. 8vo, (Alice 7.6 x 5.2 inches, : Looking Glass 7.2 x 5.1 inches. ---- Alice in Wonderland, when originally issued, was a taller book. Later editions were reduced in size to the same dimensions as Through the Looking Glas
s). Both volumes are beautifully Illustrated throughout, with forty-two and fifty line engravings respectively, by John Tenniel . Bright, clean copies, finely bound, by Bayntun-Riviere of Bath, in recent full deep red morocco bindings. Gilt ruled borders on boards with gilt illustrations on the front boards of March Hare to Alice and the Red Queen to Looking Glass. Spines with raised bands, each with gilt piping. The compartments ruled, lettered and decorated with playing cards and March Hare motifs in gilt. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Turn-ins with double gilt rules and decorative corner pieces.

Both books are the first published London editions. Alice is the earliest state with the inverted 'S' at the bottom of the contents page. A fine and attractive pair of First Editions of these classic children’s books. Housed in a purpose built, felt lined, slip case, also made by Bayntun, with a step for the shorter Looking Glass volume and red silk pull-tie. Covered in deep red cloth. Fine.

p., complete with the terminal blank (Q4), title-page and final blank rather soiled and with a few old stains, the title-page expertly reinforced at gutter, tiny marginal wormhole affecting a single letter in B3V (p.14), occasional neat and small emphasis marks in pencil. A good, crisp, copy rebound in the late 20th century in maroon half morocco with raised bands and gilt lettering.

Photos presented with paper corner mounts, recto verso on 44 black sheets ; v. sl. frayed original patterned cloth-covered boards, silk ties, with later news clippings of historic photos laid down on top and bottom boards.

Original half title present to volume three. Faded ownership name to the top edge of title page of volume II and the occasional short closed tear and finger mark throughout. A very attractive example.
