Title

Operetta dell’Ambascieria de Moschoviti, nella qual si narra il sito della provinicia di Moschovia, gli costumi ricchezze, il modo della religione & l’arte militar di quegli. Nuovamente tradotta di Latino in Lingua Volgare

Authors

GIOVIO [JOVIUS] (M. Paulo).

Description
First Italian edition. Woodcut title, depicting a Christian warrior with a banner and an eagle on an orb. 12mo. Late 19th century 'papier dominote' (patterned) boards, a few margins lightly water-stained, with some minor spotting to endpapers, but otherwise an outstanding copy given its age. 17pp. Rare.

The first significant European description of Russia from the 16th century. The original latin edition (De
legatione Basilii Magni Principis Moschoviae) was printed by Francesco Minizio Calvo in Rome in 1525. Paolo Giovio (1483-1552) was an Italian historian, physicist and doctor. This work is based on conversations with the Russian ambassador Dimitri Gerassimov at the court of Pope Clement VII in Rome. The papacy and the Habsbourg had frequently proposed to the Muscovites that they should join together against the Ottomans. Giovio's book was utilised by many travellers to Russia in the 16th and 17th centuries.

THE MAN UPSTAIRS

Authors

WODEHOUSE, P.G.

Description
First edition. Original brown cloth with title stamped in blind on upper cover and in gilt with embellishments on the spine. A very good copy indeed that is bright and clean. Internally the poor quality paper shows noticeable foxing to the preliminary pages as usual, but clean throughout most of the book. An uncommonly nice example of one of the scarcest Wodehouse first editions.

Peter Harrington are pleased to say that we have recovered our copy of the Federalist Papers, which was reported lost or stolen after the San Francisco book fair.

We would like to say a huge thank you to Mr Bustamante and his crew, who carefully went through all the showcases used during the fair and found the book at the back of the recess of one of the display cases. Apparently another book also turned up during the search.
