North America Description Heinrich Scherer was a devout Jesuit, and professor of mathematics at Munich. His 'Atlas Novus' contained maps of all other parts which showed the spread of Catholicism and Jesuit missions. One of the two "general" maps of North America from the series of about six of North America only, produced by Scherer to show the spread of Catholicism in the continent. This decorative map depicts a large Islan d of California with an indented top, interior mountains and only two placenames. Note Copper engraving, fine example. Size 360x240 mm. Granata Nova et California. California.

Authors

Description
Description Based on Mercator-Ortelius information this is the first separately published map of the California region. Wytfliet published the first atlas devoted exclusively to America and this was one of the nineteen maps it contained. This map is an example of a cartographic error long perpetuated by the European mapmakers--the routing of the Rio Grande (or Rio Bravo) del Norte southwest to the Gulf of California rather than southeast to the G ulf of Mexico. The river is shown flowing from a large mythical lake in the New Mexico region with the nearby legend "Septem civitatum Patria". It is surrounded by devices representing seven cities, presumably the "gilded" Seven Cities of Cibola. The Gulf of California is called both "Mar Vermeio" and "Californie Sinus". By the close of the sixteenth century no map of this region still extant can be said to have been made directly from actual exploration and observation. Wytfliet (d. 1597) was Geography Secretary to the Council of Brabent during the mid-16th century. Note Copperplate, some repairs at central fold, generally in very good conditions. Size 300x235 mm. (11.8x9.3 inches).

Florida et Apalche. Florida and East Coast.

Authors

Description
Description In 1597, when Flemish mapmaker Cornelius Wytfliet published the first atlas devoted entirely to the New World, he included "Florida et Apalche" as one of nineteen maps depicting various regions of North America. Wytfliet's maps were among the first to concentrate on facts rather than legends, on geography rather than political demarcations. The lack of detail on this map shows how little was known about the interior of North America. Note Copperplate, some reapairs at central fold, generally in very good conditions. Size 300x235 mm. Himlisches Freuden-Wahl der Kinder Gottes auf Erden. Oder Geistreiche Gebete

Authors

Description
(SILVER BINDING). Himlisches Freuden-Wahl der Kinder Gottes auf Erden. Oder Geistreiche Gebete. Lüneburg, Sternischen Buchdruckeren, 1761. Octavo. (16), 429, (3) pp. A German prayer book, illustrated with ten full-page engravings plus the double-page pictorial title. Titlepage printed in red and black. In a highly ornamented contemporary chased silver binding. The front cover shows two cherubs holding up a coat of arms surmounted with three crown s and a banner, which bears the name "MAX, Comte de Preysing." The Preysing family is from Bavaria and the style of the silver work is consistent with that of the eighteenth century and of southern Germany. At the top and bottom of the cover are two angel's heads, the entire cover showing dense ornamentation with floral sprays and swirls. The rear cover is similar, but shows the cherubs holding up a crown from which hangs a large floral spray. The spine is covered with swirls and fruit, and the head and tail are augmented with plates which overlap approximately 3/4 of an inch of the top and bottom edges of the book. Closed by a clasp, which is ornamented with flowers. All edges gilt, with gauffering to the corners. Pages lightly browned. (19278)
