Printed at London by Iohn Harison. 1601. small 4to., 125 (i.e. 126) + 2pp., co mplete with the terminal blank (Q4), title-page and final blank rather soiled and with a few old stains, the title-page expertly reinforced at gutter, tiny marginal wormhole affecting a single letter in B3V (p.14), occasional neat and small emphasis marks in pencil. A good, crisp, copy rebound in the late 20th century in maroon half morocco with raised bands and gilt lettering.

Environs of SHANGHAI, PEKING, MANCHURIA and other locations no doubt identified by the Chinese/Japanese captions. sm. oblong 4to album with 116 photographs, silver gelatin, various sizes inc. 4’’x5.5’’ (75), 4’’x3’’ or 2’’x3’’ (35), one small circular image 2’’ in diameter of a locomotive, and larger group portr aits 5’’x8’’ (4 ; 3 with central vertical folds), most images VG tones, with Japanese captions, usually legible in white ink to one side, and 27 with captions printed in the image. Photos presented with paper corner mounts, recto verso on 44 black sheets ; v. sl. frayed original patterned cloth-covered boards, silk ties, with later news clippings of historic photos laid down on top and bottom boards.

FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. Folio. (11.1 x 7.5 inches). x11,222pp. Lacking last, blank, leaf. Decorated with woodcut engraved ornamental title page and engraved head and tailpieces. Tiny (3mm deep) chip to the fore edge of the title page and the first few leaves are just a little browned but overall a lovely clean and crisp copy with good margins. Finely bound in recent 'Grolier' period style full calf binding. Spine with five raised bands. Compartments ruled, lettered and fully decorated in gilt. Burgundy title label, gilt. Triple blind ruled border on boards, surrounding a triple blind ruled panel which frames an elaborate decorative onlay and gilt design. A lovely copy in a fine period style binding of this rare work.

The front binding had come apart from the book. Lawrence Durrell’s own copy inscribed by him, saying, and I write this from memory  My copy of The Black Book bound by the one eyed ......,,,,[bookbinder?] on Corfu .......... which I give to Mrs...........  - ...............   ( signed by Lawrence Durrell. ) Unfortunately I do not have a photo of this inscr iption and I think it was a little longer. The lady it was given to had a double barrelled name.
